Elon Musk has introduced a new update on X that allows Grok, the platform’s AI system, to rearrange posts in the Following feed.

Instead of listing posts strictly in the order they were published, Grok now decides which ones appear first based on what it interprets as most relevant to each user.

The update began rolling out after Musk asked users to refresh their X apps to see the change.

With this update, a user might now see a close friend’s new post placed above an earlier tweet from a celebrity or public figure, even if the celebrity posted first.

The system is designed to surface posts that the AI believes match users’ habits, interests, and interactions. For users who prefer the familiar layout, X still provides access to an unfiltered chronological view through the feed settings.

The change marks one of the biggest changes to the Following feed since the Musk-led overhaul of X began in 2022. It also makes Grok more visible within the platform by placing it directly inside one of the app’s most used screens.

How this Grok update changes your timeline

Switching the Following feed from showing posts in chronological order to an AI-ranked order means that X is now using machine learning to sort posts in a section that many users depend on for immediate, unfiltered updates.

The Following feed has always been considered the “unfiltered” timeline, where posts appear in the precise order they were published.

Introducing Grok into that space means X is now treating the Following feed more like a discovery-driven system, even though users are still seeing posts strictly from accounts they intentionally follow.

This update may also influence how creators appear in the feed. Accounts that usually get buried in the middle of a busy timeline may now appear higher if Grok detects that a user interacts with them often.

A simple example: if a user frequently likes posts from a small business owner but rarely interacts with a major public figure, the small business content could rise above the celebrity’s newer posts. This could shift visibility patterns for both large and small creators.

It also places more weight on user behaviour. Every like, comment, share, or profile visit becomes a signal that can affect which posts rise to the top. As users adapt, their feeds may adjust more quickly depending on their daily activity.

This update may make the Following feed feel more personalised for regular users because the accounts they interact with most often will appear at the top.

For creators and businesses, ranking higher in the feed could result in more steady engagement, especially if their posts match the trends Grok detects from their followers.
