Android phones are about to get the new theft detection lock that can keep personal information safe.

Recall in May of this year, Google teased a new Theft Detection Lock tool for Android phones.

Android New Theft Detection Lock Finally Rolled Out on Androids

The feature would sense a device’s motion — such as someone snatching a phone and then running, biking, or driving away — and immediately lock the screen, Google said.

Google has already debuted the new anti-theft features at I/O, including theft detection, offline lock, and remote lock in Android 15.

According to Android journalist Mishaal Rahman, Theft Detection Lock is finally rolling out in Androids.

Google elaborated that the AI uses your phone’s gyroscope and accelerometer to watch for “common motion associated with theft.” However, the exact motions weren’t detailed, but it’s assumed to be a quick jerk or jolt followed by rapid acceleration.

The AI Powered Upgrade Only Available to Few Users

If the feature detects those motions, it immediately locks your phone screen. With the remote lock, you can protect your data by remotely locking or wiping your device after verifying your identity on any connected device.

Meanwhile, the offline device lock adds another layer of security by automatically locking your phone if someone tries to keep it offline for too long.

Rahman highlighted that the feature is rolling out to a limited number of users in Brazil who signed up for Google’s beta program. According to him, it was due to significant user feedback about the high rate of smartphone theft in the country.

When the feature does roll out fully, it will probably start with newer Google phones, but will eventually be available on all Android 10+ devices, or essentially any modern Android phone.
