Nigeria introduces ‘convert now, pay later’ for CNG to facilitate the conversion of petrol-powered vehicles to compressed natural gas (CNG).

According to the National Orientation Agency (NOA), these payment options allow individuals to convert their vehicles now and pay later with “affordable” monthly instalments at “competitive rates.”

This follows the government’s announcement that it will begin distributing 2,000 CNG-powered tricycles to youths in the transportation sector across Nigeria, starting October 1, 2024, through the Presidential Compressed Natural Gas Initiative (PCNGi).

The PCNGi team also said yesterday that it had a strategic meeting with Xinge, a tricycle manufacturing company based in China, with plans on partnership and investment into the Nigerian CNG sector through the CNG Industrial Park.

The agency stated in its payment options announcement that “Switching to Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) is now more accessible than ever.” With flexible payment plans tailored to fit your budget, transitioning from petrol to CNG has never been smoother or more affordable.”

Furthermore, according to the agency, the online application process provides quick approval and support at every stage.

The agency emphasised the benefits of CNG, which include environmental impact, safety, and reliability, stating that it is a proven technology with a track record of safety and dependability. It urged immediate application to convert vehicles to CNG using an installment payment plan.

Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGi)

Recall that in August 2024, the government introduced an app for switching from petrol to CNG as part of the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGi).

At the time, the app was said to be available on Google Play and the Apple Store. Using the app, users can find nearby conversion centres, book appointments, and access discounts and updates on fuel prices.

A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) has also been signed by PCNGi and the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) to convert vehicles on the Abuja-Itakpe Station-Adavi route to CNG.

Additionally, an agreement was signed with the Nigeria Police Trust Fund (NPTF) to implement the Nigerian Police CNG Conversion Programme, which involves managing CNG conversion centres set up by the NPTF.

However, the Amalgamated Union of App-based Transporters of Nigeria (AUATON) has expressed dissatisfaction with missing out on CNG conversion benefits, claiming that e-hailing drivers only receive a 50% discount and must still pay for installation.
