US-based consumer electronics company, Belkin recalls power bank and wireless charger in South Africa over fire hazard concern.
They informed South Africa’s Consumer Commission of a recall of the Belkin BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for the Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K, BPD005.
The Company confirmed that manufacturing defects may cause the portable wireless battery charger’s lithium cell component to overheat, posing a fire hazard to consumers.
The NCC said it is monitoring the recall based on Product Recall provisions within the Consumer Protection Act.
The Belkin BoostCharge Pro Fast Wireless Charger for the Apple Watch + Power Bank 10K, model BPD005, is reported to be sold online and distributed by Fast Forward (Pty) Ltd. The product was introduced to the market in June 2023.
The company has advised consumers who have the product to cease using it, dispose of it, and reach out for a full refund. To request a refund, consumers are required to fill out a form, providing their contact information along with a valid product serial number, a photo of the product, and proof of purchase for each item submitted.
This is not the first major product recall in this category. In June 2024, Baseus, a Chinese company with a strong presence in South Africa, reportedly recalled about 132,000 magnetic wireless charging power banks due to a potential fire risk.
Belkin has urged the consumers to stop using the product
The company also urged the consumers to stop using the recalled lithium-ion batteries immediately and reach out as those with proof of purchase will receive a full refund, while those without proof are eligible for a $36 cash refund.
Baseus received 171 incident reports, including 132 cases of “bulging or swelling batteries” and 39 fire-related complaints. There were also reports of 13 burn injuries and about $20,000 in property damage.
In South Africa, product safety recall guidelines mandate suppliers to adopt a system that will ensure the efficient and effective recall of unsafe consumer products from consumers and from within the supply chain.

The recall systems should be tailored based on the type of product and the level of risk it poses to consumers. A consumer product safety recall may be initiated when an issue identified could present a health or safety hazard.
Suppliers may also initiate a voluntary product recall if they become aware of safety concerns. Product recalls can be negotiated with suppliers by the Commission or other regulators when a safety issue is identified or as a result of enforcement or compliance actions.
