His father, the son of a lawyer, founded a construction company in 1950, which became one of Egypt’s largest contractors, building roads and waterways along Egypt’s upper Nile region.

The business was nationalized in 1961 by President Gamal Abdel Nasser and renamed El Nasr Civil Works Company. Frustrated at being reduced to an employee at his own company, Onsi moved to Libya, where he built a new general contracting company.

After six years, relations between Libya and Egypt were fraying and Onsi moved back to Egypt where he started anew for the third time, founding Orascom Construction Industries.

Through partnerships with international companies working on local projects, Orascom grew to be one of the largest private builders in Egypt by the mid-1990s.

Samih joined the family business in 1980 after receiving his Engineering Diploma in Engineering Management from the Technical University of Berlin.

At Orascom, Samih helped expand the company’s operations into developments and hotels. It had split into three separate operating companies by 1990: Orascom Telecom, headed by Naguib, Orascom Development and Hotels, led by himself, and Orascom Construction Industries, overseen by the youngest, Nassef.

Samih has served as CEO and chairman of Orascom Development Holding AG since its incorporation. He became a Montenegrin citizen in 2011. In 2011 he took a 12.5% stake in Swiss football club FC Luzern.

In December 2019, he acquired Thomas Cook Germany through his Raiffeisen Touristik (RT) Group, which he already bought 74.9% of its shares in 2014.

The yacht measures a total length of 46.7 meters. Its draft measures 2.85 meters in length, while the beam measures 8.5 meters in length. There are a total of 3 decks on the yacht, which makes it fairly large and spacious both on the exterior and interior.

Samih Sawiris Andermatt

The beginning of the Andermatt Swiss Alps sounds like a fairytale.

Samih Sawiris took a helicopter ride over the sleepy Swiss ski village of Andermatt in 2005. And he was struck by its remote wilderness.

The resort was only a 90-minute drive from Zurich. And yet it felt like a secret hidden in the mountains of Uri. It’s arguably the rugged country’s least discovered canton and immediately Samih saw the town’s potential.

Conclusion

Samih Sawiris has no doubt acquired quite a fortune and a legacy built to last for generations to come. He rewrote his life’s story from just another rich man’s heir to a symbol of wealth, business, and entertainment.

He shocked the world when he announced his decision to step down as chairman of Orascom Hotels and Development in 2022. Nevertheless, it is undeniable that he played a role in making Orascom Industries a diversified and successful conglomerate that employs over 100,000 thousand Egyptians.

His success is not based on just what he was given or even his social class. But it’s defined by what he did with what was given to him.

If he could do it, anyone, despite their financial backgrounds, can. However, the right mindset and principles are important factors that shape great outcomes.
